BAFCA statement on recent actions by the BAFL

The British American
Football Coaches Association is extremely disappointed in the actions of the
directors of the BAFL in their move to divide/take-over the sport by removing
the BAFL from the umbrella of the National Governing Body, BAFA.

The
BAFCA fully support the stance made by BAFA on their website (www.bafa.org.uk (http://www.bafa.org.uk/)) and urge all
parties to work together to resolve this situation for the unity and benefit of
everyone within the sport.

The BAFCA is proud to be the longest running
national association for American football coaches in Europe and to have
provided the model for an increasing number of other nations.
The BAFCA
has been the official coaching arm of BAFA for the past seventeen years and is
committed to providing support for all BAFA members in the development of a
first class coaching system. The proposal by BAFL to effectively duplicate a
small number of the services already provided to coaches by BAFCA and BAFA would
be wasteful of time and financial resources and detrimental to the efficient
growth of coaching in the UK.

The BAFCA advise all coaches not to be
pressured into joining any alternative coaching structure offered by
BAFL.

Any concerns or questions by members on this issue should be
addressed to the BAFCA President, Jim Messenger: jim.messenger@bafca.com (mailto:jim.messenger@bafca.com)
or Director of Coach Education, Jon Wyse: jon.wyse@bafca.com (mailto:jon.wyse@bafca.com)

Over 40 coaches attended the first North West
regional coaching clinic at Edge Hill University on 23rd January
2010.

The clinic was organised by Coach Simon Purcell
(Defensive Co-ordinator, Lancashire Wolverine Colts DBs coach, GB Lions
Youth) who was inspired by the Eastern region clinics.

With 8 talks planned and 40 coaches keen to learn,
Mark Squire kicked off the day by delivering a comprehensive and extremely
relevant session on Strength and Conditioning for British Football. Coach Paul
Horsburgh followed with a session on defensive line fundamentals before coach
Dave Reid explored the concepts behind the Shropshire Revolution Passing game.
London Blitz coach Mike Callan then delivered the first of his two sessions on
defensive back play, before the morning concluded.

After a short break for lunch, the clinic continued
with coach Craig Pennington delivering a session on linebacker play. This was
followed by referee Charlie Dean-Young providing a useful insight into the
thought processes of a referee and key areas that BAFRA will be focusing on in
the coming season.

The penultimate session saw Coach Horsburgh run
through the concepts behind the GB Lions Running Game. Coach Callan delivered
the last session of the day with almost all of the attendees still present, an
indication of how great a speaker coach Callan is. His session focused on ‘the
3rd phase of the game’, Special Teams.

Organiser Simon Purcell was delighted with how the
day went: “As a young coach I am keen to take any opportunity to learn and
become a better coach. When I organised the clinic I hoped to get around 20
coaches to attend and so to have 40 shows that there is a desire among coaches
to get better and improve our game. I’d like to thank all the speakers and
coaches who attended the clinic.”

Feedback given at the clinic showed that all coaches
present enjoyed the day and would attend future clinics; with many commenting
on what an inspirational and passionate coach, Coach Callan is. We hope that he will be able to attend future
clinics.

It is hoped that further clinics in the region can be
organised, potentially during the summer months when on-field sessions will be
possible. If you are interested in organising a clinic in the region or
speaking/attending future clinics please contact Simon Purcell on si_purcell@hotmail.com (mailto:si_purcell@hotmail.com).
